Opened 2010, Highly
Commended by Orkney Heritage Society, Laura Grimond Award
for "building
excellence in Orkney"
Woodwick
Mill has been renovated to provide superior
self-catering accommodation in a beautiful burnside
setting. The environment is quiet and serene with ducks,
trout, grey wagtails and the relaxing sound of Woodwick Burn babbling over the flagstone bedrock.
The accommodation is finished to an excellent and well-equipped standard. The eco-friendly
building
is highly insulated and warmed by heat pump with solar
panels providing hot water.
Each apartment has a Spa Bath, separate shower, fridge, freezer, cooker,
microwave and Jamie Oliver tableware.
There are superb views over the surrounding countryside
and neighbouring islands. All double beds are King sized.
With ample parking the Mill is 20 minutes’ drive from each of the two
main towns, Kirkwall and Stromness.
The
self-catering accommodation is suitable for gatherings
with each group or family having a separate apartment.
The
mill dam has been repaired and a fish ladder added to
enable trout to reach the upper reaches of Woodwick
Burn. The objective has been to restore the natural
environment of the Woodwick valley for the enjoyment
of guests. As the public road is at
some distance the magical tranquility is not disturbed
by traffic noise.
Woodwick House next door is a warm & welcoming historic country house
with a fully licensed bar.
Nearby
archaeological sites include the Broch of Gurness, Midhowe Broch, Skara Brae, Maeshowe, Standing Stones of Stenness,
Ness of Brodgar
(as featured on the recent Neil Oliver programme ) and Ring of Brodgar.
